Safe Shipping Timing in Summer and Winter

How temperature and delays affect bottles and how to reduce risk during transit.

Quick Answer

Wine is perishable. Shipping standard Ground during July or January is a recipe for disaster. We monitor weather daily.

  • Safe Range: 40°F to 75°F along the ENTIRE route.
  • Summer Strategy: Use Next Day Air (AM delivery) or Temperature Controlled Freight.
  • Winter Strategy: Avoid freezing (corks push out). Wait for a warm spell.
  • Hold for Weather: We often pay you now and ship later when safe.

The Danger Zone

Trucks are not air-conditioned.

  • A UPS/FedEx truck can reach 120°F in summer. 2 hours in that heat will cook your wine.
  • Freezing temps can freeze the wine, cracking the bottle or pushing the cork.

Shipping Strategies

We balance cost vs. safety.

  • Monday Shipping: Always ship early in the week so wine doesn't sit in a warehouse over the weekend.
  • Styrofoam Shippers: Essential insulation. Cardboard dividers offer zero thermal protection.
  • Ice Packs: Helpful for short trips (Overnight), but useless for 5-day Ground (they melt and create condensation).

Using Temperature Control

For large collections (pallets), we use refrigerated trucks (Reefer trucks).

  • Maintains 55°F constant.
  • Takes longer (2-3 weeks cross country) but is 100% safe.
  • Best for shipments of 20+ cases.

Common Mistakes

Impatience.

  • Demanding 'Ship Now' in August during a heatwave.
  • Assuming 'Overnight' is safe (it sits on a tarmac for hours).
  • Using thin cardboard boxes.

What to Do Next

Frequently Asked Questions

Do spirits need temp control?

Generally no. Whiskey and Tequila are high alcohol and very stable. They can ship Ground safely in most weather.

Can I use dry ice?

No! Dry ice is dangerous goods and can freeze the wine instantly. Never use it.

Who pays for shipping?

We typically cover shipping costs. We will select the method based on value and weather.

What about insurance?

We insure all shipments. However, insurance often denies 'heat damage' claims if shipped against advice. Safety first.

Is early morning delivery better?

Yes. Delivery by 10:30 AM avoids the hottest part of the day in the delivery truck.
